UH logo woes unfold online

[ The Proposed Logos ]Two new logos proposed as part of a comprehensive branding of the University of Hawai`i system have meet with mostly jeers since they were unveiled last week. Developed by a Mainland company at a cost of $82,000, the logos — dubbed “Wave” and “Spectrum” — were intended to convey “East Meets West.” But many students, faculty and local residents are seeing red instead, an online petition gathering over 1,300 signatures so far from people calling for the proposed designs to be scrapped entirely.

Woman charged for cruise ship threats

A California woman is in federal custody tonight after threatening notes found aboard a cruise ship bound for Hilo prompted the FBI and local law enforcement to divert it, board it, and search it for biological, chemical, radiological and explosive weapons. Kelley Marie Ferguson, 20, of Laguna Hills, Calif., has been charged under federal law relating “acts of terrorism transcending national boundaries.”

Alien seaweed threatens reefs

[ Algae Clean-Up | Photo by Jennifer E. Smith ]Infestations of an alien species of limu, or seaweed, threaten Hawaii’s coral reefs, said UH botanist Dr. Cindy Hunter. Gracilaria salicornia was intentionally introduced to the islands in an attempt at aquaculture, she said, but has now become a menace to native reefs.

Earthquake’s 30th anniverary observed

April 26, 2003 marked the 30th anniversary of the magnitude M6.2 Honomu earthquake. This earthquake occurred at 10:26 a. m. and was centered north of Hilo, beneath the town of Honomu. The earthquake caused nearly $6 million in damage, to roads and highways, lifelines and utilities, and over 400 homes and businesses.

Biotech firm fined for Hawai`i crop

Experimental, genetically-engineered corn growing on Kaua`i may have contaminated nearby crops, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA fined biotech firm Pioneer Hi-Bred International, a subsidiary of DuPont, $72,000. The Iowa-based company found 12 corn plants on Kaua`i had traces of a crop that had been genetically designed to resist the pest rootworm.

Na`alehu businessman Douglas John Fathke, 44, has been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of his 8-year-old daughter Kelsie. His bail was set at $550,000, and arraignment is scheduled for today. While the police investigation is ongoing, West Hawaii Today reported that Big Island Mayor Harry Kim disclosed that the suspect had problems with crystal methamphetamine addiction in the past. The shooting has stunned the family’s neighbors as well as the second-grader’s mother, who now lives in Washington.
