City nets fed grants for homeless

Eight programs coordinated by the city that provide shelter and services to the homeless have been awarded more than $4 million in federal funds, Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris announced today. "These programs will enable us to improve our impact in addressing the homeless problem in an effective and compassionate way," Harris said. "The funds help to provide transitional housing to homeless families with children and those with chronic substance abuse, severe mental illness and disabilities."

The funds are provided by the 2002 Continuum of Care programs, administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The City’s Department of Community Services, through its community-based Development Division, manages the funding process in the City and County of Honolulu.

The programs which received the $4,018,227 in HUD funding are:
