Hawaiian Airlines will fly Boeing 717 jets into and out of Kalaeloa Airport (JRF) this month and next through a special arrangement with the state Department of Transportation. While regularly scheduled commercial flights are generally prohibited at the general aviation facility, state officials said the airline needs an enclosed hanger to perform warranty repair work on the planes. Arrivals and departures are expected every four days.

Hawaiian Airlines will be leasing Hanger 110, adjacent to the Pacific Aerospace Training Center.

Last week, the company announced that it would return two leased Boeing 717 aircraft to the manufacturer, and extend lease negotiations on 14 other planes. Hawaiian Airlines features a fleet of 13 Boeing 717s and 13 Boeing 767s.

Formerly known as Barbers Point Naval Air Station, the state-run, three-runway airport received $1.8 million in federal funds earlier this year to continue its conversion to civilian use.
