Family snubs woman in cruise threat case

The mother of 20-year-old Kelley Marie Ferguson declined to vouch for her or offer collateral for bail, and sat silently in court today as federal prosecutors called her daughter immature and unstable. Without any backing from her family, Ferguson’s public defender did not argue against the government’s request to hold her without bail.

A California woman is in federal custody tonight after threatening notes found aboard a cruise ship bound for Hilo prompted the FBI and local law enforcement to divert it, board it, and search it for biological, chemical, radiological and explosive weapons. Kelley Marie Ferguson, 20, of Laguna Hills, Calif., has been charged under federal law relating “acts of terrorism transcending national boundaries.”

His bail was set at $550,000, and arraignment is scheduled for today. A man standing trial for the murder of his wife claims he was pushed over the edge by the stress of losing his job in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, his suspicion that she was cheating on him, and her alleged teasing. Florencio Garperio, 52, lost his job as a cook in September 2001, and according to police ultimately confessed to the killing. Defense attorney Dale Bennett said his client was “calm, cool, and collected” until he “erupted like a volcano.”
