‘Breathe’ concert to praise smokeless air

The American Lung Association of Hawaii is bringing together several Hawaii entertainers for a concert to celebrate a controversial new smoking ban. “Passage of the law that prohibits smoking in bars, restaurants, airports, offices and all other public spaces was a milestone in public health,” said association director Jean Evans. “We must protect this pro-health law and focus attention on the necessity to retain and strengthen it during the 2008 legislative session.” The Jan. 12, 2008 concert will be held at Hawaii Theatre and will feature the premiere of “Breathe,” a song written especially for the American Lung Association by Johnson Enos and Kenneth Makuakane.

Wil Wheaton is once again venturing into the unknown on a giant vessel, but it’s not the Starship Enterprise — it’s the Norwegian Star. Wheaton, who starred in the Star Trek: The Next Generation television series, has been touring the islands by sea. And while he’s awestruck by the volcanoes on the Big Island, he said urban Honolulu “just reeks of desperation.”

Hawai`i woman wins Emmy

Local girl Faith Rivera took home an Emmy Award on Saturday for a song she co-wrote for the NBC soap opera Passions. The song, “Forever Near,” was broadcast in August as a tribute to late actor Josh Ryan Evans. Riviera, born and raised on Kaua`i, is now a singer and songwriter in Long Beach.
Reality TV guru to helm “North Shore” series

Mark Burnett, the man behind CBS’ smash hit “Surviror,” this week signed on to produce a reality television series focusing on surfers and surfer culture in Hawai`i. “Boarding House: North Shore,” announced in December, is scheduled to begin its six-week summer run on Wednesday, June 18 on The WB. Burnett will be tasked with molding the footage shot on the North Shore of O`ahu last year into “outstanding television.”

Hawaii woman up for Daytime Emmy Award

A Sacred Hearts alumna has been nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for a song she wrote for the NBC soap opera Passions. Esther Faith Rivera, who grew up in Waipahu but now lives in Long Beach, Calif., is up for Outstanding Original Song for a piece written and aired in tribute to late actor Josh Ryan Evans.
Hawaii’s Valentine cut from ‘Nashville Star’

Hawaii-born entertainer and would-be country singer Tasha Valentine gave her all on the third episode of the combination talent- and reality-show “Nashville Star” on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough for the show’s judges, who cut her from the competition at the conclusion of the broadcast. But her aunt tells HawaiiNews.com that the world “won’t be seeing the last of Natasha Kaiulani Valentine.”
