Columbian extradited for 1999 murders

A former rebel group commander in Colombia blamed for killing a Big Island woman and two of her colleagues was extridited to the U.S. today. Nelson Vargas Rueda, a member of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, was indicted by a federal grand jury last April. Lahe`ena`e Gay, 39, of Pahoa, Hawai`i was in Colombia on a goodwill mission four years ago when she and two collagues were kidnapped and killed by FARC members.

Expert: Shifting S. Korea stance may complicate talks

Rising anti-American sentiment in South Korea will have a definite impact on ongoing talks with North Korea, according to an East-West Center specialist. A survey found South Koreans had a more negative impression of their nation’s traditional allies — the United States and Japan — than longtime adversaries China and North Korea.

Expert: N. Korean provocations unlikely

As Japan stepped up maritime security patrols and North Korea postponed economic and maritime talks with South Korea because of the war in Iraq, a U.S.-Korea specialist at the East-West Center believes Pyongyang will likely avoid further provocations against the United States in the short-term and instead focus on how to bring the Americans to the negotiating table.

Experts: N. Korea may want bombs, not talk

Although the United States has now expressed willingness to talk to Pyongyang about its nuclear weapons program, North Koreans may not be interested in talk but instead intend to “acquire as many nuclear weapons as they can by the spring,” a leading American expert on the Korean Peninsula said at an East-West Center conference that ended here yesterday.
