Hawaiian Airlines Inks Airbus Deal Hawaiian Airlines today announced that it has signed a "definitive purchase agreement" with aircraft manufacturer Airbus to acquire 12 new long-range wide-body planes with an option to buy 12 more. Provided all of the purchase rights are exercised, the deal is valued at $4.4 billion. The decision comes after the carrier reached key labor agreements with its pilot and flight attendant unions on the introduction of new aircraft. Two weeks ago, Hawaiian Airlines said it may have to cancel the Airbus deal due to protracted negotiations with the unions. “I want to thank and commend the leadership of our unions for demonstrating a shared vision and commitment to building a successful and profitable future for Hawaiian that serves the interests of our customers and employees, maximizes shareholder value and contributes even more to the growth of Hawaii's tourism economy,” said President and CEO Mark Dunkerley in a statement. The airline currently has 18 Boeing 767-300 airplanes in its fleet, and previously planned to replace at least four of them before 2010. Under the Airbus deal, Hawaiian is acquiring six wide-body A330-200 aircraft and six A350XWB-800 (Extra Wide-Body) aircraft, plus purchase rights for six more of each. According to Hawaiian Airlines, the A330-200 seats 305 passengers in a twin-aisle, two-class configuration, and has an operating range of 5,500 nautical miles. It can therefore fly significantly farther than Hawaiian's current fleet and will provide the ability to serve all of North America and points in eastern Asia nonstop from Hawaii. In addition, it carries 45 more passengers and is more fuel-efficient than Hawaiian's current fleet. The extra-wide-body A350XWB-800 seats 322 passengers in a two-class configuration and has a range of 8,300 nautical miles, which will give Hawaiian the capability to fly nonstop between Hawaii and Asia, Australasia, the Americas and Europe. The airline says the A350 carries 24 percent more passengers and is 20 percent more fuel-efficient per seat mile than its current fleet. Royal Gardens is no stranger to lava flows Royal Gardens subdivision was back in the news again this past week as a lava flow from the July 21 fissure advanced to within 300 m (985 ft) of the uppermost cross street. On the evening of January 8, a rootless shield near the fissure breached, releasing a flood of lava that formed a channelized `a`a flow. For the next five days, the flow advanced toward Royal Gardens until it stagnated late on January 13. As long as the rootless shields directly uphill of the subdivision remain active, this is likely to be a temporary reprieve for the two remaining residents.

A man reportedly threw a toddler to his death from a freeway bridge in Honolulu at around noon today. Police already have a suspect in custody. A breaking news item from The Honolulu Advertiser says witnesses saw a man, dressed in what looked like hospital scrubs that were cutoff at the knee, throw the child from the pedestrian bridge at Miller Street. A camera crew from KITV captured footage of the 23-year-old suspect as he was taken away, and he reportedly called out, "Thank you for everything!" The child has not been identified, and it is unknown whether the boy was related in any way to the suspect. Police are checking local day care facilities in the area to see if anyone is missing a child, KITV noted. All westbound lanes of the H-1 are still closed at the Vineyard offramp as the investigation continues. Traffic was already backed up through Kaimuki by 1 p.m. This island tragedy comes only a week after 37-year-old Lam Luong threw four young children from a bridge to their deaths in Alabama. McMackin is new UH Warriors football coach Greg McMackin has been named the new head coach of the University of Hawai'i football program. The announcement was made this morning, although McMackin was considered far and away the favored candidate to succeed June Jones, who left UH to coach at SMU after a nine-year record-breaking run. "I am honored and very humbled to accept the head coaching position at the University of Hawai'i," McMackin said in a statement. "June Jones can never be replaced. He has done so many great things for the program, the university and the state of Hawai'i and his legacy will never be forgotten. My destiny is to keep the program headed in that same direction and to maintain the continuity with our current players and recruiting base." McMackin previously served as the Warriors' defensive coordinator, and he helped the team improve from a ranking of 93rd nationally in total defense to 33rd. The Warriors captured the WAC Championship both years, including this past year's perfect 12-0 regular season, and earned a trip to the Allstate Sugar Bowl, McMackin's 12th bowl appearance. With McMackin at the helm, the UH defense ranked fifth nationally in tackles for loss, ninth in sacks, and 11th in interceptions while recording five defensive touchdowns. 'Breathe' concert to praise smokeless air The American Lung Association of Hawaii is bringing together several Hawaii entertainers for a concert to celebrate a controversial new smoking ban. "Passage of the law that prohibits smoking in bars, restaurants, airports, offices and all other public spaces was a milestone in public health," said association director Jean Evans. "We must protect this pro-health law and focus attention on the necessity to retain and strengthen it during the 2008 legislative session." The Jan. 12, 2008 concert will be held at Hawaii Theatre and will feature the premiere of "Breathe," a song written especially for the American Lung Association by Johnson Enos and Kenneth Makuakane. Perched lava channel elevates the flows Despite the potential hazards, the ongoing eruption from Kilauea’s east rift zone is a remarkable and fascinating sight. It is startling to see a river of lava coursing between broad levee walls that tower above the surrounding land surface. What the casual observer may not know, however, is that this is a one-of-a-kind phenomenon. A perched lava channel has never been seen before. This makes it particularly difficult to forecast what might happen next. MORE >>>
